A Beautiful Mind emphasizes the importance of supporting adoptive families after their adoption is finalized. The adoption process is not always “smooth sailing”, but more serious issues may arise after the child comes home, whether for the parents, the adoptee, or siblings.
Families created through adoption face common issues and challenges that evolve along with the children’s growth and development. Adoption counseling is designed to assist members of the adoptive family with:
No Direct Cost to the Family with medical subsidy.
Consultation, information on applying for and accessing Medical Subsidy and financial resources available to families.
Assessment
A trained Social Worker visits with your family, in your home, to help determine the services and community support that can benefit your family. Together, we develop a specific plan to bring about a solution to the issues at hand.
Support Groups
A Beautiful Mind can refer you to professionally led support groups for adoptive parents and children who were adopted. These groups give parents and children a place to talk about the challenges they are facing with other people who truly understand.
Case Management
Our goal is to support your family in any way possible. We put together a plan to help your family reach desired goals. That may mean we personally visit with your family, accompany you to school meetings, locate resources or make phone calls for you - whatever it takes.
Respite
All parents need a break from time to time, especially if their child is struggling. We'll work with your family to identify respite services that will benefit both you and your child. Respite services can include traditional activities such as overnight stays or specialized child care, but they may also include creative resources such as enabling your child to attend camp or therapeutic play groups.
Counseling
Adoption-related counseling can address issues of grief and loss related to their birth family, identity formation, trusting others or feeling connected to others, or the fear of losing other people in one’s life. When issues related to one’s adoption are not addressed, there can be difficulty in developing relationships with others, resulting in misplaced anger, and the lack of self awareness. Not all struggles in life for the adoption triad are related to adoption, but it is important to explore this part of one’s experience to help reach a healthy resolution. Counseling services are available for anyone whose life has been touched by adoption, regardless of the agency that you worked with for your adoption.
